Although the title of this page is inspired by Scott Cunnigham's book, Living Wiccan, this page is mostly a central point for a series of essays regarding the different rooms of the house and how Pagans live there. I am especially indebted to Scott Cunningham and David Harrison for their superb book, The Magical Household. If you don't own this book, you should.
So, enter the Doorway, stop by the Kitchen for a snack, warm your hands at the Fireplace, in the Living Room, brush your teeth in the Bathroom, and have a good night's sleep in the Bedroom. Almost as important as enjoying your house, you've got to keep it clean, so here's a collection of magickal cleanings.
Enjoy your journey,
Ma'at

Doorways
are magickal places (windows too). Think about it -- they are the
Threshold, the Guardians, the Protectors of the house. Pagans have
long regarded the doorway as a sacred place, and lay herbs or amulets beneath
the doormat, trace protective symbols in salted water upon the door or
its frame. All to protect this sacred space from negative influences...
Kitchens are also sacred spaces within the Witches' house. Many witches
call themselves 'Kitchen Witches,' not because they are fabulous cooks,
but because they wish to indicate a practical attitude towards magick.
The kitchen is a room of life -- most people congregate there when visitng
with friends, and the last decade or so has seen more homes being built
with kitchens that are designed for entertianing -- breakfast nooks, counters
for stools to be pulled up to, open designs that allow the cook to be a
part of the group, rather than shut away in isolation.
Fireplaces, like doorways, are especially sacred places. Once upon a time, to not have fire was to die, and the fire served as the central fixture of the home. Nowadays, the fireplace is generally off
...in the
Living Room, used only for special occasions or when the power goes off.
But the living room of a Pagan is probably also the entertainment room
-- maybe even the 'public' ritual room!
Rituals involving bathing are wonderful, but there are many aspects
of this room that can be used for ritual purposes. For example, this
room is *full* of running water, so it is a great place to cleanse yourself
of negative energies from the outside world, or to wash away any bad vibes
from your household. I find that ritually washing my hands
of an argument is a helpful device for letting go of the anger and getting
to a more positive attitude in which I can solve the problem rather than
attack it. It also helps me accept where my part is in the
fault of the situation...
This
room is where we spend most of our time... even though we're generally
asleep <g>. Sexuality is sacred, and good sex will keep
the energies of this room positive. (more to come...)
